Molds, natural binders and more

So far we have experimented with a variety of fillers mixed with epoxy - and while most of them have produced structurally sound and interesting forms, they are not recyclable or compostable. We experimented with different molds and found that by using less epoxy and pressing the composites into molds under pressure it created much stronger results. In our recent batch of samples we played around with natural binders that were starch and gelatin based. While these compositions were not as strong - it was interesting to play around with different compositions and understand a little more how eco-binders are made. We mixed the starch based binder with corn husks to create a compostable composite. The gelatin based binder was clear and flexible. We are planning on playing around with eco-plastics more but adding glycerin into the mix.

Recipes

Corn starch based:
3/4c Water
1 Tbl corn syrup
1 tsp vinegar
Mix these ingredients in a sauce pan at medium heat until boiling
Mix 3/4c cold water and 1c corn starch separately then add in and stir until clear

Gelatin binder:
3 packs gelatin
9 Tbls water

Boil water then add gelatin and stir in completely - let set for 1-2 days or bake at 200 degrees to speed drying
